Oblong Darricarrere Pendant
Oblong Darricarrere Pendant
The Oblong Darricarrere Pendant. Made from hallmarked, chased and cast Sterling Silver and set with cabochons of vibrant amber Donegal Agate, two-hued Blue Aventurine, and a large blue, white and amber Lazulite.
This is a heavy piece of jewellery. I was not sure about its weight when I was carving it in wax but knowing how heavy Dalle de Verre windows are – and this is meant to be an embodiment of them in jewellery, I decided to go along with it. I wanted three gems to sit in it and they had to complement each other. I decided on opalescent gems rather than translucent ones so that the colours could never be affected by whatever was being worn behind the gems.
I had cut all three gems before I created the wax and played around with how to set them until I got the layout you see. Donegal Agate at the top – the rough stone a gift from my friend Patrick, Blue Aventurine with that lovely darker stripe through it in the middle and then Lazulite that I bought from my friend Ivan as a much larger rough stone sits at the bottom. I felt the colours in the Lazulite tied the other two gems together.
When it came to styling this piece, I really let-my-hair-down. Roger Darricarrere’s Dalle de Verre windows often had highly figured concrete matrices holding the glass in place, and I wanted to emulate that in this pendant. If you’ve ever seen one of Roger’s windows, you’ll hopefully agree that I achieved my goal.
The steel balls either side of the pendant are a nod to the steel pins that would have been used to hold the Dalle de Verre panel in place in the mullion. Then that’s it – done.
This pendant is 87mm tall, 37mm wide and 10mm deep.
