The Orbicular Menhir Open Ring. Made from forged, hallmarked Sterling Silver and set with a fabulously domed cabochon of amber Orbicular Agate.

I had been given this piece of agate by a jeweller friend of mine (Katherine Lawrie) and was not sure what I’d do with it.

Then I was playing with different ways to adapt the Menhir design format and came up with these ‘open’ rings. The Open Rings will clasp around the finger, but they are not a complete circle. This one in particular took on a life all its own as I was forging it around the mandrel, as it decided to shape itself to a finer angle than I had intended. At first I was not sure that it would work, and I was not sure sure what shape gem could best suit this unexpected shape.

So, looking through my gems I found this cabochon of Orbicular Agate and decided to try that. It was perfect as is balanced the other side of the ring and just went far enough across the finger to keep the ring in place but still show off the idea behind the ring’s design.

This ring is 27mm tall, 27mm wide and 37mm deep.
